Minister shannon phillips

As Minister of Environment and Parks, and the minister responsible for the Climate Change office, I receive a lot of advice from various stakeholders however the critical voice of Alberta’s youth is still missing. As your Minister, I would like to hear directly from you on values important to youth in Alberta on a broad range of subjects and initiatives related to climate change such as alternative energy, energy efficiency and environmental management and stewardship.

As a member of the Youth Council, this is an opportunity for you to provide feedback to me on climate change issues that are most importance to youth today and for the future of this province. This Council offers an opportunity for you to inspire passion amongst Albertans, to be the voice of your peers and make meaningful contributions to the social, economic, and environmental future of our great province.

Youth Council members are expected to contribute their ideas and perspectives related to climate change issues through their participation in regularly scheduled Council meetings. Members of the Council will be supported through a Secretariat to meet both online and in-person several times a year to discuss issues that matter to them. The Council will have quarterly discussions with the Minister and work together on initiatives that can improve the current system to prepare Alberta’s youth for success in the future. Council members will interact with each other outside of meetings to discuss ideas and upcoming activities, and engage with their peer-group and local organizations to support the ongoing dialogue between youth and provincial decision-makers.

The Council will be comprised of up to 12 members, representing a diversity of background, knowledge, and interests. Members will have a demonstrated connection to youth issues and strong relationships with their communities. Selected members will be 18 to 26 years of age and will serve a one-year term, with the opportunity to extend to a second year.

If you think you have what it takes to participate in this important work, I look forward to receiving your application.

Shannon Phillips
