Review Exceptional Trails Guide Section 2.0: Planning Exceptional Trails

Section 2 describes the elements of the preferred trail activities for the recreational users, planning principles for quality trails and the various phases of planning a quality trail.

Do you feel this section is clear and the steps outlined in the planning process are correct and in the order that makes the most sense?

Review Exceptional Trails Guide Section 4.0: Trail Classification

Section 4 describes six fundamental elements of the proposed Trail Classification System for Alberta’s Public Land. A province-wide classification system will create well-planned and designed trail systems, reduce user conflict and allow trail operators to ensure compliance with trail management objectives.

We would like to hear your perspective on the proposed trail classification system. Does the proposed system make sense? Would it work for your trails?

If it does not, what issues have you identified? What changes would you recommend?

Review Exceptional Trails Guide Section 4.0: Trail Classification

There are currently six fundamental elements to the proposed classification system; we are considering amending the proposed elements to simplify the model. We propose:

    • Removing mechanized from enthusiast group and placing it with the non-motorized group; and
    • Removing level of development and level of challenge as an element of the system and instead both elements become ‘considerations’ when developing a Trails Management Objective and critical elements to communicate to the public.

What are your thoughts regarding these proposed changes?

Review Exceptional Trails Guide Section 5.0: Trail Infrastructure Design Guidelines

Section 5 describes best practices for developing staging areas and trailheads, types of signage and wayfinding and various trail amenities for consideration. Trail alignment, grading and drainage are also outlined in this section as related to infrastructure development.

Do you feel this section is clear? What is missing? Is there other information required to help provide direction on infrastructure best practices? Are the suggestions practical for your trails?
